Welcome to 23 (Nelson) Squadron Air Training Corps
No. 23 (Nelson) Squadron ATC parades on Monday evenings from 6.10 to 9.10pm during the school term, at our Headquarters building on Dakota St, Nelson Airport. About once a month we have weekend activities such as camps, rifle shooting, tramps or competitions against other cadet units.
To develop and enable self-disciplined, confident and responsible young New Zealanders.
We give young people from all walks of life access to fun, friendship, action and adventure. We challenge young people to learn more, do more and try more. Our volunteer staff get to know each cadet individually, and manage safety at all activities. They inspire young people to challenge their limits, become more independent, confident and able to step up to any challenge.
What cadets doThis year members of 23 Squadron will participate in parades, bushcraft and survival camps, shoot in national and international competitions, learn about and go flying in light aircraft, visit Air Force and Army bases, use radios and leadership skills to co-ordinate our activities, travel overseas on exchange programs, help out at community events, get fit, have fun and become more confident. Sound like you? Read on.
Want to join?
We are recruiting now
If you are between 13 and 15 (or in Year 9 or 10) you are eligible to join. We run a structured training program which means that we recruit only once per year in February, and you will go through much of your training with this intake.
The Squadron will be open for tours and enrollments at these times:
- Optional activities for recruits: Monday 18 & 25 Feb 7.30-8.30pm
- Full Open Day & Tour: Sunday 3 March - tours start at 1pm and 2pm
- Full Open Night & Tour: Monday 4 March - tour starts at 7.30pm
- Location: Squadron Headquarters, Dakota Street, Nelson Airport
The Open Day is an opportunity for you to take a tour of the unit, see some examples of activities we do, and enroll if you like what you see. The Squadron's officers (adult instructors) and NCOs (senior cadet leaders) will be conducting these tours and be available to answer questions. Even if you've come along previously, we encourage everyone and their parents to come to an Open Day and see the full picture of what we do.
Important camps in Term 1: The first weekend activity for new recruits will be a uniform issue on Sunday 16 March, followed the next month by a full Squadron camp from 5-7 April. You must be available for these dates as there is too much taught on these weekends to catch up! You will get to march in the public parade on ANZAC Day (you'll get plenty of training and practice in what to do).
Cadets gain skills and friends for life - take the challenge and become one of tommorrows leaders.
If you would like to pre-register please go to the Joining page, and we will send you a reminder closer to the time. If you have any questions in the meantime, feel free to get in touch directly via the Contact page.
